AMSTERDAM TREES

august 2022

Amsterdam trees is an experimental geo-interactive music app for android devices using data from trees around you to generate music while walking through Amsterdam. The idea of this project was to achieve an intense connection with the surrounding environment and the trees in particular through music.

Basically the app is using your location and retrieves tree data through a web api to generate music. The used tree data are the age (tone frequency) and location (place in the stereofield).

The app is also showing a map which shows where you are in Amsterdam and the trees around you. The trees on the map are clickable to get info about the tree, like specie and age.

It all took some time to figure it all out but in the end the app is created using the cordova framework, Pure Data, QGis, Leaflet.js and a web api created on the knooiwark server using a huge tree data set from the city of Amsterdam.

Unfortenately the app is no longer available in the google play store but can still be downloaded as an apk file from github (including the source code). So with a littlebit of a hack you should still be able to try the app (when visiting Amsterdam, cheers :)

A walk through the Vondelpark is a track created by recording the app while walking trough the beautiful Vondelpark in Amsterdam.
