Hi there, my name is Geert Dijkstra and I'm living in Amsterdam with my lovely girlfriend and two crazy cats. Knooiwark is the alias for the music I'm creating. The love for making music started long time ago when I got my first guitar somewhere around 1983 as a young teenager. It was just a cheap crappy guitar and as being a lefty it took me a few months before I'd figured out the strings where upside down (duh...) Maybe my interest for strange sounds comes from this first few months playing the guitar :)
During the 90s I had a great time playing guitar in all kind of bands. I also started to create tracks on my own using stuff like the awesome Atari St computer, a 4 track cassette recorder, a S1000 Akai sampler, a solina organ and lots of guitars.
When it comes to making music nowadays I'm a big fan of Ableton Live, Max MSP and Supercollider. I also very much enjoy creating things outside of the digital domain just.
Besides all that I also try to find time for playing classical guitar and practice tai chi every day. I'm also a volenteer at the Allard Pierson Museum where I'm digitizing tapes from the Gaudeamus & Donemus archives, the Dutch Jazz Archive and the Dutch Pop Institute. And yes, I also just have a parttime job to pay my bills...
Check out my music below or just go to knooiwark on bandcamp directly. Most of the cover art are photograph's from empty man made environments and nature that I took.
It's great fun to make things with your hands from materials like wood and strings and self build electronic circuits. Below a hopefully continuously growing list of diy projects. It is what it is...
Self resonating strings drone box using a ebow circuit
Triplex hillbilly cello with just 3 strings
Max4Live patch, realtime granular processing on live audio
Mobile android app generating music from the trees in Amsterdam
Max4live patch generating harmony on incoming midinotes
Modular synth project
Weird cigarbox guitar
Guitar pedal making noise
The most easy fuzz pedal in the world.
Feel free to drop me an email in case you want to get in touch. Mind you, I'm not a professional when it comes to composing or anything, I'm just someone on a crazy journey of making music. Cheers!
